Do you need Guild Wars 1 or 2 to play the game?

So I was thinking about buying Guild Wars for my computer but there is all these different expansions/campaigns. Do I have to buy either 1 or 2 to play the game or if I buy something like the guildwar trilogy, or game of the year edition work?Do you need Guild Wars 1 or 2 to play the game?
The Guild Wars game consists of 4 parts: there are 3 major campaigns and one expansion.

The campaigns are Prophecies (the original "Guild Wars", released in 2005), Factions (2006) and Nightfall (2006). Each of those can be played separately, or they can be linked together on an account and played together with the same characters (which adds extra playable classes, more story, more territory, more skills, etc). The "Game of the Year edition" is the Prophecies campaign. The "Guild Wars Trilogy" contains all 3 campaigns.

The expansion is "Eye of the North" (released in 2007). It requires at least one of the campaigns to be installed, and it adds higher level content to the game. There is a "Guild Wars Complete Collection" for sale, which contains all 3 campaigns plus the expansion. Regardless of what you buy, at the moment you should be able to find each campaign/expansion for approx $10 each, or the Trilogy for around $30. Which is really good value for money given the fact that the game doesn't have a monthly subscription fee.

The Eye of the North expansion also adds a "Hall of Monuments" in which you can register your achievements throughout the 4 parts. This enables you to unlock some item rewards for Guild Wars 2:

Guild Wars 2 is a completely new and separate game, which isn't even out yet (it is expected early 2012, although no official release date has been given). It is completely separate from the original series, and requires you to start with a new character, different playable classes, etc. Its story is set 250 years after the original series. Apart from the lore, the only link between the original series and GW2 is the Hall of Monuments that I mentioned above. The game itself will be very different from the original Guild Wars, and is already causing a big buzz in the MMO world because of all the great things they are doing with the game. If you're interested to find out more, check out the official GW2 website or the arenanet blog (see links below; make sure to watch the Manifesto video in the videos section!).

I hope this answers your questions.Do you need Guild Wars 1 or 2 to play the game?
Guild Wars has three chapters, each of which can be played completely stand-alone, and a true expansion.

The three chapters are Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall and can each be played independently, or you can link them together and play them all through on the same character (that's what I did).

The expansion is called Eye of the North and to play it you need to have at least one of the other chapters (does not matter which one) and link the two together. Then you can play through that as well. You cannot make a specific Eye of the North-character like you can the other three, but need to continue into Eye of the North with one of your previous characters.

Game of the year-addition offers some in-game goodies (there is an Imp you get while levelling) and there is also another version which gives you some weapons. While these are nice they are not strictly speaking necessary.

And no, you don't need any of these to play Guild Wars 2 when it comes out; it will be a completely different game. The tie-in will be cross-game communication and if you complete achievements in Guild Wars 1 that translates through the Hall of Monuments in Eye of the North into gear in Guild Wars 2.

I have a video about that in my channel below.Do you need Guild Wars 1 or 2 to play the game?
RPG Oracle speaks the truth! If it were me, I would buy the Guild Wars Trilogy because it's all three campaigns in one, just so I could have my original characters travel to all of the different campaign territories.
