In all honesty, just wait for GW2. GW is dead right now because of terrible updates from Anet (the company that runs the servers) and sheer lack of new interest and content. GW2 will have a different feel of gameplay from GW1 and I can guarantee you 100% that they will do everything they can in the beginning of the game to teach you exactly what you need to know to play it (like every other mmorpg)
I've been playing GW for about 3 years now, and trust me you're not missing out on anything but not jumping aboard the GW ship before GW2. Just download a free mmorpg like Grand Fantasia or whatever else is out there if you need to occupy your time...they're just like WoW without having to pay the money and are great for the low low cost of Free.50
Also, Anet has said that while there will be some sort of intrinsic reward for GW1 players in GW2, it's not going to be anything earth-shattering or terribly game-changing. So if that's one of the reasons you're thinking about it then don't waste your time. Filling up your Hall of Monuments will take more time for you than it's worth
Should you decide you absolutely MUST have the game though, just grab Nightfall or any other bundle pack they have (I believe there's one out that has Nightfall, Factions and Proph for pretty cheap, but I'm not 100% sure) and jump right in.

GW2 will be better if you accomplish more in GW1 before your move onto GW2, because certain accomplishments can be carried out through to GW2.
