Guild Wars 2 will, confirmed by Anrenanet, NOT have a monthly fee, just like Guild Wars 1.

There will be micro-transactions available, but not even the Extended Experience (which is a mobile app letting you chat with your guildies while not online) will have a monthly fee.

Once you guy it, it is yours to play, free, forever.
As others have already stated, Guild Wars 2 is 'buy to play', so you buy it once, you can play it for as long as you like... no monthly fees. Though they will probably release a couple of expansions at some stage that you would also need to buy to play them (Guild Wars 1 had 4 such expansions over the course of its life).



As for then it will come out... ArenaNet/NCSoft have not released a release date yet. The only thing they have said, is "When It's Done", because they want the game to be the very best it can be, and they will take whatever time they need to make it so. Right now they themselves don't even know exactly how long this will take, so all dates you see on other sites (like IGN) are pure speculation, and release dates published on sites like amazon are only placeholders until the real releasedate is announced.



The only thing that has been announced, is that there will be a closed alpha test and closed beta test before the end of the year (no applications are accepted for these, it's friends and family only).

They have stated that there will be a public beta closer to the releasedate, but then that will be, is also still unknown. Within the guild wars fan community, most people believe it will be either late 2011 or early 2012, but there is no way to be sure.



Your best bet is, to keep an eye on the official guild wars 2 site and on the arenanet blog. Both the public beta and the release date will definitely be announced there.Will Guild Wars 2 Have a monthly fee?
Guild Wars 2 won't require any subscription be paid after the initial game purchase. You will be able to buy upgrades, items and storage through the game, however.
