Well, Guild Wars2 hasn't come out yet, so we don't know much about what it will be like.
Guild Wars on the other hand is fairly similiar to other MMOs. I think the main difference is "instances". When you leave town in GW you are in your own copy of the game world. Outside town, you won't encounter other players unless they are in your own party (or the enemy team in PvP)
I can't answer the question, so let me specify some things...
Barney had it explained pretty good, but "Charlie" and "T-101" obviously have no clue what they're talking about! I've looked up just about all there is to know about GW2 so let me explain.

How is guild wars 2 different from other MMOS?GW2 will have awesome graphics, it's not just "pretty". The have spent half a year kind of side-tracked on Eye of the North, but this past year, they have been non-stop working on it. So it's gonna be great. Here's an example, yknow how someone has a quest and they say "Help, Im being attacked by...

centaurs!" But really, they're somewhere, standing in a field? Well, your going to actually SEE the centaurs wrecking the village and killing the merchants! If you decide to let that village burn and they don't have a good guard, that village WILL be wiped off of the map! Also, random events........

How is guild wars 2 different from other MMOS?will happen, such as a huge dragon will come and start attacking Divinity's Reach (one of the last standing human city's in GW2) then maybe one of the top player guilds will organize an alliance attack party and go kill it, and if they succeed, the dragon is dead and won't come back! Get it now?

While Guild Wars 2 adds a persistent world, it retains the unique nature of the original game including a strong narrative, extensive instanced gameplay, an anti-grind design philosophy, and strong support for competitive play.
It's not very different, just like Gray Oak, Pokemon Master said, it's just pretty so many people play it.
Guild Wars isn't very different from other MMO's. It's very simple and just an everyday MMO. It just looks pretty, that's why people play it.
